A Father’s Legacy in Medicine and Teaching

Dr. Bernadett, Sr. was born to immigrant parents from Chihuahua, Mexico, and grew up in Michigan, where he developed a deep sense of service. He eventually settled in Chico, California, becoming the only Spanish-speaking family doctor in the area. Beyond providing care to his local community, he volunteered internationally, including trips to Vietnam and remote villages in Mexico, providing care to patients who might otherwise never see a doctor.

His dedication extended to education. For many years, Dr. Faustino Bernadett, Sr. mentored family medicine residents and students at UC Davis, flying to campus while managing a busy practice and prioritizing family. Tragically, his life was cut short in a plane crash while returning home from one of these teaching commitments. His son, Faustino “Tino” Bernadett, was devastated. Dr. Bernadett’s devotion to mentorship and patient care continues to inspire generations of physicians.

Clínica Tepati: A Community Impact

Dr. Faustino Bernadett, Sr.’s commitment to underserved communities is reflected in Clínica Tepati, a student-run medical clinic affiliated with UC Davis. Operating primarily on Saturdays, the clinic provides free primary care and social services to underserved Latinx patients in Sacramento and the surrounding areas. Recognized as an early founder, Dr. Bernadett, Sr. helped establish the foundation for the clinic’s mission of service and education.

In honor of his father, Tino Bernadett established the Faustino Bernadett, Sr. M.D. Scholarship Fund at Clínica Tepati. This scholarship supports medical and undergraduate students who demonstrate leadership and dedication to underserved communities, ensuring that Dr. Bernadett, Sr.’s values of compassion, education, and service live on.
