Faustino Bernadett continued his longstanding commitment to uplifting young people by contributing a meaningful and inspiring video for the 2026 Boys & Girls Clubs of Long Beach Youth of the Year celebration. His message reinforced the importance of mentorship, perseverance, and community support in shaping the leaders of tomorrow.
The event, held on Thursday, February 19, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Hotel Maya in Long Beach, brought together community leaders, families, educators, and supporters to honor the remarkable achievements of the Club’s teen leaders. The evening showcased powerful personal stories, celebrated resilience and determination, and highlighted the lasting positive impact the organization has on youth throughout the Long Beach community.
The Mission of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Long Beach
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Long Beach are dedicated to helping all young people, especially those who need extra support, reach their full potential as productive, caring, and responsible citizens. The Club provides a safe, welcoming, and structured environment where youth can learn, build confidence, and develop critical life skills.
Through after-school programs, summer enrichment opportunities, leadership development initiatives, and mentorship, the organization creates pathways for academic success and personal growth. Young people are encouraged to explore their interests, set goals, and discover their strengths while building meaningful connections with peers and mentors who guide them along the way.
Meet the 2026 Youth of the Year Finalists
J’miya Lomeli, a Poly High School student, shared how stepping into a leadership role in her community sparked personal growth. “At first, I wasn’t sure I was ready… but I relied on my empathy, willingness to listen, and determination to show up for others,” she said. J’miya plans to become a lawyer or registered nurse and credits the Club’s Keystone program with helping her develop confidence and leadership skills.
Dahnya Potts, also from Poly High, spoke about how the Club helped her navigate challenges and grow as a leader. “The Club gave me opportunities to develop skills and handle setbacks,” she said. Dahnya hopes to inspire younger kids and pursue a career as a pediatrician, drawing on the lessons she learned through her experiences at the Club.
Samajahe King, a Cabrillo High School student, described the Club as a place where she found direction and support. “It is where I found my voice, my confidence, and my purpose,” she said. With mentorship from her dance coach Amber Leake, Samajahe gained confidence and leadership skills, while also excelling in track. She plans to study psychology in college to help other young people overcome challenges.
These finalists’ stories highlighted the ways the Boys & Girls Clubs help youth build resilience, confidence, and leadership.
Announcing the 2026 Youth of the Year
Samajahe King was named the 2026 Youth of the Year at the Gala. She received a $5,000 scholarship and will have the opportunity to advance to regional, state, and national competitions. The program continues to honor outstanding teen leaders in Long Beach, recognizing their commitment to community, education, and personal growth since 1947.
