The Molina Foundation Brings 60,000 Books to Detroit with 313Reads
Dr. Faustino Bernadett has always been dedicated to giving back. Over the years, he's contributed his time, skills, and resources to many charitable efforts. One of the most meaningful was co-founding The Molina Foundation in 2004 with his wife, Dr. Martha Molina Bernadett. This nonprofit works to improve access to education and healthcare, helping communities nationwide.
Earlier this year, 313Reads was selected as a 2024 Book Buddies grantee by The Molina Foundation. This partnership brought about 60,000 new books, valued at nearly $1 million, to children and families across Detroit and Southeast Michigan.
The Molina Foundation's Book Buddies program helps by distributing new books to community agencies that support children and families in need. Through partnerships with various organizations, they have given out over 4 million books to help create more enriching home environments.
The Molina Foundation's 2024 Book Buddies grant is a great match for Detroit this year. Announced at Focus: HOPE, the initiative ensured families across Detroit and Southeast Michigan benefit from this generous donation.
Focus: HOPE received 600 books, which made it possible for visiting children and families to enjoy new reading materials. About 300 volunteers helped distribute the books across the community.
Together, 313Reads and The Molina Foundation are working to close the literacy gap and help every child thrive through reading.
313Reads Mission and Vision
313Reads aims for a future where all Detroit's children, families, and adults can access the opportunities, instruction, and resources necessary for developing literacy and grade-level reading. These skills are essential for self-determination, economic stability, and well-being, enabling individuals to engage in their communities. The organization believes in literacy as a path to empowerment. To make this a reality, 313Reads ensures that those supporting children have the necessary tools. Their approach includes collaborative learning, continuous improvement, and culturally relevant literacy instruction to promote equity in literacy.

Over the years, Focus: HOPE has become a trusted part of the community. The organization believes that access to opportunity can make a significant difference in people's lives. For over 50 years, Focus: HOPE has continued its work to combat racism, poverty, and injustice, and its mission remains important today.
